A mental-health advocate for women’s rights has slammed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s controversial “religious freedom” bill, saying the measure could make it easier for the mentally ill to access mental health care.

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., who introduced the bill, said she believes the GOP bill is “a bombshell,” noting that it would make it more difficult for people with mental illness to receive the care they need.

Murray is among Democrats who have criticized the bill as an attempt to give religious exemptions to a narrow set of conditions that many conservatives, including McConnell, oppose.

Murray has also called for a public apology to religious conservatives for any harm that the bill could cause.
